Team Updates

Extemp:

This year, we sent 13 extempers to States - congratulations to you all! In Varsity Extemp, semifinalist Justin Ha placed 9th and Eshaal Ubaid CHAMPIONED, taking the title of 1st place in NY state! In JV Extemp, semifinalist Myles Vuong placed 7th, with the vast majority of our JVers placing in the top half of prelims. The extempers are still hard at work as we practice and gear up for Nationals!

Public Forum:

Public forum excelled at states, placing 2nd overall! In novice, freshmen Lander Bovenzi, Nara Kong, Anika Chandran, and Amani Kaushal were all semifinalists, while freshmen Adrien Devery-Michaelson and Ethan Zheng made it to quarterfinals! Also, freshmen Evan Goodman and Ziv Barel made it to elimination rounds. Congratulations to all of the novices for qualifying and making it so far! In intermediate, sophomores Eric Liu and Benjamin Yarden placed 2nd in the state! Sophomores Jasmine Liang and Solomon Binyaminov were semifinalists as well. Finally, in varsity, juniors Astrid Harrington and Helen Mancini advanced to quarterfinals. We’re so proud of all of the work our team has put in, and we can’t wait to see what next year will bring!

Congress:

Congress had a great performance at States! Amidst tough competition, Congress placed 3rd overall! Big congratulations to finalist Daniel Prizant and semifinalists Raymond Chen and Ellis Thompson. We are so proud of all of our competitors who made it to States: Freshman Ilmah Sattar, Sophomores Danny Akh, Sebastian Tecza, Timothy Louie, Louis Oh-Aronson, Catherine Chan, Ellis Thompson, and Raymond Chen, Juniors Jia Lin and Daniel Prizant, and Seniors Sarah Diaz and Olivia Woo. We’re very proud of everyone and looking forward to seeing the team’s performance next year!

Lincoln Douglas:

LD went to states and won 4th overall! In varsity, senior Henry Ji was state semifinalist, while junior Daniel Zheng advanced to the quarterfinals and sophomore Yuna Lee reached octofinals. Junior Princedon Hom was also close to breaking. In novice LD, freshman Evelyn Lifton reached semifinals, while freshmen Mufei Yu, Archana Ovitigala, Emma Lin, Alexis Qian, and Kiren Sitwala advanced to octofinals, and freshman Ethan Shi was one ballot away from breaking. We are so proud of all the hard work our debaters have put in, and are excited for the NCFL in May!

Parli:

Stuy Parli had a great time debating at the NYPDL April Online Tournament! Frieda Kuehlmann received 5th Novice Speaker and Paul Stipp received 4th Novice Speaker. In outrounds, debater Adrian Turkedjiev in a hybrid made it to varsity octofinals. In the Novice division, debaters Jacob Spitzer and Qasim Rizvi as well as debaters Katelyn Huang and Melody Qu made it to octofinals. Debaters Paul Stipp and Alexander Georgatos made it to novice semifinals. Looking forward, the Stuy Parli team is preparing for NYPDL Championships, our last tournament of the year! We will be sure to give it our all and end the season off with a great performance.

Policy:

Despite the lack of competitions lately, the Policy team has been preparing for NCFLs and conducting practice debates virtually. We are also setting up an online scrimmage with teams from Bronx Science for our novices so they can get some practice. Even during this break, Policy remains hard at work and plans to end the season strong at NCFLs!

Speech:

The Speech team won 1st place overall at the NY state championships this weekend! An incredible first-in-the-state effort was made by every single one of our competitors. From our state champions to our team members who brought food and judges, every single person was instrumental in our victory.

Congratulations to champion Audrey Hilger and 5th place Ethan Khosh in Humorous Interpretation; champion Amanda Greenberg in Declamation; the 5th-place pair of Beirne and Lin in Duo; 4th place Erica Liu and 7th place Renae Leung in varsity Oral Interp, and 3rd place Amanda Greenberg and 9th place Olivia Cisse in JV Oral Interp!

A massive congratulations to everyone for qualifying and making the speech team number one in New York! We couldn’t ask for a better capstone to the season and send-off to the seniors, who are incredibly, incredibly proud of how well the team has done and how far they’ve come. We’re looking forward to Nationals over Memorial Day weekend!
