Dear Speech and Debate families,

Welcome to the second weekly email of this year! From now on, updates will be sent out every Monday morning. Thank you to all the parents and team members who attended our kickoff meeting! We hope you found it informative.

Our next tournament is the Princeton Invitational. For the team members going, please read the emails sent out by Ashley Lo (qlo50@stuy.edu) over the last few days. Permission slips and class excuse forms are on the website and instructions for the check have been sent out via email. Please submit them by Tuesday (12/3). As always, we will drop off luggage near the principal’s office and leave at 12:00 PM sharp. Please be on time!

Your support makes it possible for us to go on tournaments and succeed and we’re deeply grateful for all the support we’ve received. Donations are instrumental in helping our competitors attend as many tournaments as possible!

You can donate directly to the Stuy S&D family through the following link: stuyalumni.org/givespeechanddebate. If your company offers a matching program, the Tax ID is 13-3509279. Once again, thank you for any support, monetary or otherwise!

As a reminder, please mark qlo50@stuy.edu, jlin56@stuy.edu, and hmancini50@stuy.edu as safe senders so that you can be kept up to date with our team’s activities! And as always, information and contact information for questions can be found on our website. We’ve also uploaded the information packet from the kickoff meeting to the homepage!

Sincerely,

The S&D Team

Team Updates

Extemp:

Stuy Extemp had a blast this November! At the Scarsdale Invitational, Sophomores Nuoyan Chen and Joya Liu, are now qualified for the JV State Championship, and Elina Siu rocked the competition. On the bus ride back, there were many laughs and fun times. We are continuing to practice hard with our coach and former captain Eshaal Ubaid in anticipation for Chapin and Princeton!

Public Forum:

Public Forum had a great time at Horace Mann! Sophomores Taseen Khan and Aditya Roy came in second place! Freshmen Sasha Silakov and Zachary Massim came in fourth, and sophomores Tessa Haidu and Naba Rahman came in fifth. We also had a great time at the John Lewis Invitational, where juniors Solomon Binyaminov and Annie Li and sophomores Lander Bovenzi and Adrien Devery-Michaelson made it to doubles. We’re preparing for Princeton and excited for all of our upcoming competitions!

Congress:

Stuy Congress had an excellent performance at Little Bronx! Juniors Timothy Louie and Catherine Chan, alongside sophomore Lyla Storm, advanced to finals, with Timothy earning a half qualification to states. The tournament also served as an important training opportunity for our novices, many of whom competed in their first tournament and gained valuable experience. At Scarsdale, a competition tailored for JV and novice debaters, sophomores Ryan Ho and Ilmah Sattar stood out with exceptional showings, both advancing to finals. Ryan placed 5th overall and secured a half qualification to states, while Ilmah finished in a strong 8th place. This event was a fantastic opportunity for our novice debaters to hone their skills and grow, further building momentum for what promises to be an outstanding season!

Lincoln Douglas:

LD had a great time at the Little Bronx tournament, with Alexis Qian championing JV LD and getting a half qual to states! 6 of our novices went 2-1 at their first-ever tournament! Ethan Chen won top speaker and finished 4th overall. Chloe Wang was 2nd speaker, and 5th overall. Emily Harsono was 4th speaker and 6th overall. Both Ethan and Chloe got half quals to states! During Scarsdale, in novice LD, Emily Johnson placed 6th and got a half-qual to states! Ethan Chen and Chloe Wang, for the second consecutive tournament, got first and second place in speaker points respectively. Mufei Yu placed 4th and got a half qual to states in JV LD! We've been hard at work drilling and doing practice rounds in preparation for the Princeton Classic.

Parli:

Parli is having an amazing debate season!

Policy:

Recently, Policy Debate sent their novices and some JVers to a local tournament at Archbishop High School. There, all of our JVers made it to the top 10 speakers! Our novices also did amazing, with Manya Gautum and Olivia Gao were the first place team with 2nd and 3rd place speaker awards respectively. Cheer our novices on as we continue with the season!

Speech:

Speech novices had a blast attending their first tournament, the Scarsdale Invitational! In Declamation, Sophomore Mariya Markova won 3rd place, earning a half qualification for the State tournament, while Freshman Zoe Yoon earned 11th place. We are so proud of our team and look forward to our next tournaments, the Princeton Invitational and Chapin! In the meantime, we are working hard to hone our pieces in practice sessions with our new coach, Bronwyn Doebbeling!
