Team Updates

Extemp:

Extemp has been exploding on the local circuit! At Regis, sophomores Ethan Zheng, Alina Dong, and Nusaibah Karim all earned half-quals in JV Extemp, coming in 4th, 7th, and 8th place respectively. Sophomores Abiyan Alam and Alexander Qu also shone during finals!

At P.S. 95, Extemp once again swept the board. Congratulations to sophomores Elina Siu, who placed 2nd in JV Extemp; Nusaibah Karim, who placed 5th; and Vicky Shi, who placed 8th! All three gained their half-quals, despite some minor setbacks regarding actually getting to the auditorium, both Nusaibah Karim and Vicky Shi are now fully qualified for the state tournament. The whole team shared some laughs and had a great meeting the day before. We are continuing to practice and work hard in preparation for our next tournament at Bronx Science and Harvard!

Public Forum:

Public Forum has had an amazing few weeks! The team attended two online tournaments and did amazing at both. Sophomores Lander Bovenzi and Adrien Devery-Michaelson made it to doubles at the USeattle tournament and CHAMPED Columbia! Also, juniors Annie Li and Solomon Binyaminov made it to octas at Columbia, earning a silver bid to TOC! Now, PF is focused on practicing for our upcoming tournaments, Hen Hud and Harvard. We can’t wait!

Congress:

Stuy Congress remains unstoppable, delivering yet another series of stellar performances at both Sr. Raimonde and P.S. 095!

At Sr. Raimonde, our debaters once again showcased their immense preparation and skill. Junior Catherine Chan, Sophomore Ryan Ho, and Freshman Charlie Vater all broke to finals, with Catherine receiving a half-qualifier to the State Championship! From intense research to practice rounds, the entire team worked tirelessly to bring their best arguments forward, making this tournament another proud moment for Stuy Congress.

Building on that success, P.S. 095 saw an even stronger showing, with Lyla Storm, Sebastian Tecza, Ryan Ho, Yoonha Shim, Charlie Vater, and Max Abraham all advancing to the finals. Among them, Lyla championed the tournament in 1st place while Sebastian secured 3rd, Ryan finished 8th, and Max finished 12th place, all earning half-qualifications to the State Championship! With incredible growth and improvement across all the novices, junior varsity, and varsity congress debaters competing, we’re looking toward yet another strong showing at the State Champs this year!

Lincoln Douglas:

Stuy LD once again had a strong showing at Columbia! Despite strong competition in the varsity division, our juniors and sophomores held their own with 5 of them finishing with solid even records. In the novice division, Emily Harsono was the tournament champion and went undefeated, with Emily Johnson and Ethan Chen finishing as semifinalists! Emily Johnson was also the tournament’s top speaker and it wasn’t even close. Every novice either went 3-3 or better, marking Columbia as one of our best novice showings thus far.

Parli:

Stuy Parli had a great showing in January with Alexander Georgatos and Lucas Miller breaking into the varsity finals. Carter Kuo and Jacob Spitzer got to varsity quarters amidst intense competition! Lar Foster got to varsity octofinals as well, rounding out an amazing performance for Parli!

Adrian Turkedjiev CHAMPIONED Berkeley Invitational, the biggest Parli tournament of the year! He did fantastic and even brought up the Republic during finals (shoutout to his Western Political Thought teacher, Mr. Polazzo). We’re looking forward to continue competing, and continue winning!

Policy:

Stuy Policy has been hard at work practicing and training for the last batch of debate tournaments this season! With the novices in the wonderful hands of our varsity members and coach, we’re looking forward to attending invitationals in February!

Speech:

Speech’s hard work has not yet ended! The team competed at a local tournament hosted at Regis High School. In Dramatic Performance, junior Amanda Greenberg earned a half qualification in 4th place and junior Audrey Hilger earned 8th. In Declamation, Stuyvesant dominated! Junior Ananya Gupta won 3rd with a half qualification, sophomores Wendy Wang and Jaydon Mei earned half qualifications in 4th and 7th respectively, and freshman Zoe Yoon won 10th place. In Programmed Oral Interpretation, junior Olivia Cisse earned a half qualification in 2nd place. We are so proud of our competitors as we continue to work hard and earn half qualifications for the state tournament. We look forward to our next tournaments, especially Harvard!
