Dear Speech and Debate Family,
Welcome back to the Stuyvesant Speech & Debate team weekly update! As Grands Qualifiers and state championships draw near, our team has been working tirelessly to prepare. We have just a few months left until the end of the season, and we look forward to making the most out of it and finishing strong!
With less than 1 week to go until we host Grands Qualifiers on March 18th, we’ve sent out emails to students and parents who have volunteered to bring food. The emails include information on the time of arrival, the quantity of food needed, and the location of food drop-off. Please check your email if you signed up to volunteer!
As a reminder, you can find all of the team pictures, weekly updates, tournament schedules, permission slips/forms, and donation page on our website. Thank you for being a part of the Stuyvesant Speech & Debate family!

Team Updates
Public Forum:
This week, our novices wrapped up their discussions on the February topic with a practice round, where they got to sharpen their argumentation and speaking skills! Meanwhile, our junior varsity debaters started learning the March topic with a topic lecture. Everyone is looking forward to competing or volunteering at Grands!
Policy:
After coming out of the past few weeks with back-to-back tournaments, policy was able to catch their breath this week and reflect on their performance. We took the time to review feedback from judges, give speech redos, and strategize on improvements each team can make to their arguments. We also started looking towards the future by going over next year’s topic to get a head start on prepping when this season ends. Up next is OPLs and Grands!
Lincoln Douglas:
This week, our novice members focused on team bonding activities, while the varsity members participated in the digital speech and debate series tournament over the weekend. Our novice members have been working hard to learn about varsity debate and prepare for their junior varsity seasons! We are also looking forward to the upcoming Grands event, in which we will both host and participate!
Congress:
With the State competition drawing near, Stuy Congress has been working hard to get as many state quals as possible! During Regionals on March 7th, sophomore Daniel Prizant and freshman Raymond Chen advanced to the final round, with Raymond placing 11th and earning a full qualification for states! Then, at the March 9th BDL, Daniel won, earning his first half qual of the season. Varsity members also have a lot on their plate, with juniors Sarah Diaz, Olivia Woo, and William Tang competing at the Grands national qualifiers next Saturday! We look forward to debating from the home field!
Parliamentary:
Parli did great this weekend at the NYPDL March Invitational! Adrian Turkedjiev was 5th speaker overall, and Adrian’s hybrid team made it to Varsity Semis! Additionally, Hannah Riegel and Molly Carroll Thompson made it to Varsity Quarters, and Lar Foster and Zeke Abramowicz made it to Novice Semis! We are super proud of our teams, and we congratulate them on their victories!!
Speech:
Last week, Speech competed at the Last Chance local tournament, and the March 9th BDL online scrimmage. A huge congratulations to all competitors! At the Last Chance, the duo of Renae Leung and Eli Lifton were champions in Duo Interpretation! Renae placed second and Ariana Lin placed fifth in JV Oral Interpretation, with Renae fully qualifying for the State championships. At the BDL scrimmage, Amelia Estévez was champion in Declamation, and Xili Chen placed third! In Original Oratory, Justin Ha was champion and Emily Lu placed second! This week, Stuy Speech is fully ramping up for the Catholic Forensics League Grand National Qualifier, which will be held at Stuyvesant this Saturday. All of our competitors are practicing incredibly hard and will be amped up to compete. A huge thanks to everyone who volunteered to help at the tournament and our coaches and varsity speakers for helping us polish our pieces, and best of luck to all competitors!
Extemp:
Extemp made huge progress in the national circuit at Speech Districts this past week, with Eshaal Ubaid qualifying for Nationals in Arizona, and Aleksey Olkhovenko and Justin Ha placing as first and second alternates respectively. With Grands right around the corner, the Stuy Extemp team is working to prep our competitors and preparing to host this extraordinary tournament!
