Stuy S&D Weekly Update: 3/20/23

Dear Speech and Debate Family,

Welcome back to the Stuyvesant Speech & Debate team weekly update! On Saturday, we hosted the NYCFL Grands Nationals Qualifying Tournament at Stuy, and it was a tremendous success both competitively and organizationally. The Stuyvesant Speech & Debate team earned 17 total qualifications for Grand Nationals, the most of any school in the New York Catholic Forensics League. In addition, over 60 members of our team volunteered their time and effort, generously preparing and serving home-cooked food for competitors and judges. A big thank you to all Stuy judges, volunteers, and parents, and a huge congratulations to all competitors!

As a reminder, you can find the team pictures, weekly updates, tournament schedules, permission slips/forms, and donation page on our website. Thank you for being a part of the Stuyvesant Speech & Debate family!

Stuy Speech and Debate at Grands!

Team Updates

Speech:

Last Saturday, Speech competed at the Catholic Forensics League Grand National Qualifier on our home turf! In Declamation, Nia Lam made it to the semi-finals, Will Zhang came in sixth, qualifying for Nationals, and Eli Lifton came in third, also qualifying for Nationals! In Dramatic Performance, Ethan Khosh placed 8th and is the second alternate for Nationals. Audrey Hilger came in 5th, qualifying for Nationals, and Melia Moore was 2nd, also qualifying for Nationals! In Oral Interpretation, Anjini Katari and Renae Leung were semi-finalists, and Erica Liu came in 6th and qualified for the national tournament! Lastly, in Original Oratory, Emily Lu was 4th and also qualified for Nationals!

Extemp:

We had three entries for Grands this weekend who took the TOP THREE PLACES in extemp! Congrats to Aleksey Olkhovenko, Eshaal Ubaid, and Kai Li for outstanding performances, and to the entire extemp team for showing up to volunteer. Kentucky Nationals, here we come! Meanwhile, we congratulate the many competitors who are fully qualified for states, and the couple who are almost there (good luck at the BDL, everyone). We are also deep into March Madness, having had a parliamentary debate crossover practice last Friday, and more to come in the following weeks!

Public Forum:

Public forum took on Grands and had all three of our entries qualify for Nationals! Helen Mancini and Astrid Harrington won 6th, Erica Lung and Annie Li won 5th, and Amrisha Roy and Kikyo Makino-Siller won 3rd. Our eight volunteers also had a blast distributing food, assisting competitors, and bonding as a team. Go Stuy!

Lincoln Douglas:

This week we competed at Grands! Henry Ji and Daniel Zheng both qualified for Nationals, with Daniel placing first and being the ONLY person in the LD category to get 7 ballots! We’re super proud of him and also very grateful to everyone on the team who showed up to volunteer and support the tournament.

Congress:

This weekend, juniors William Tang, Sarah Diaz, and Olivia Woo attended the NYCFL Grand tournament! All competitors worked incredibly hard to prepare for the competition, and the results paid off, with William placing 6th and receiving a qualification for the NCFL National tournament, and Sarah and Olivia both advancing to finals and placing 9th and 11th respectively. Stuy Congress is very proud of our team for coming to volunteer, spectate, and helping to host Grands on our home turf!

Policy:

Policy flipped roles from competing to volunteering at Grands this weekend! We’re incredibly proud of our teammates for the time and effort they put into their rounds, which led to great results. During the week, our debaters worked on refining their arguments for the CFLs that are coming up over Memorial Day weekend! Finally, prep for next season is underway as we focus on building fundamental knowledge on next year’s resolution topic of Economic Inequality.

Parliamentary:

This past week, Parli had a great time with our extemp cross meeting (we love you extempers) and we enjoyed learning their format as well as teaching them ours. In the upcoming week, we plan on running practice rounds and having more lectures to prep for NYPDL April tournament. Parli is continuing to march along, and we are excited about the upcoming events!
