Stuy S&D Weekly Update: 3/27/23

Dear Speech and Debate Families,

Welcome back! This week, Stuyvesant hosted an open house event for prospective incoming freshmen, and the speech and debate team had the opportunity to present to interested parents and students. If you happen to know an incoming freshman who would be interested in joining our team, please share this email and our website with them! We always welcome new members.

Also, the long-awaited quarter-zips for the 2022-2023 season have arrived! If you ordered a quarter-zip and have yet to pick it up, please go to room 627 this week to pick it up!

As a reminder, you can find all the team pictures, weekly updates, tournament schedules, permission slips/forms, and donation page on our website. Thank you for being a part of the Stuyvesant Speech & Debate family!

Team Updates

Congress:

Stuy Congress had an exciting time at last Thursday’s BDL! Sophomores Daniel Prizant and Victoria Cheung placed first and second respectively, earning their second and final half-qualifications to the state tournament! This BDL was only open to competitors who had previously acquired a half-qualification, and all members who still currently have a hanging half-qualification are working hard to prepare for the BDL next Thursday. They hope to join our current tally of eight state competitors, who are all gearing up for the competition happening in just over a month!

Lincoln Douglas:

StuyLD has been working hard to do research on the March-April LD topic! We’re getting ready for the State tournament in April, where Lauren, Henry, and Daniel will be competing! We’re also excited to go to Grands Nationals in May, where Henry and Daniel will be competing. Our novices have been hard at work learning more about progressive LD debate and have had a ton of fun team bonding!

Parliamentary:

Parli has been busy completing more practice rounds! Next week, we will send Adrian Turkedjiev, Henry Bansbach, Everett Torrey, and Isaac Houts to the NPDL Tournament of Champions (TOC)! For the upcoming meetings, we plan on having general debriefs and practices that are TOC-centered. We will bring our all to this tournament, so wish us luck!

Policy:

Policy this week continued to prep more for next year’s topic! This week was the first in many upcoming lectures where our debaters can expand their knowledge on next year’s topic, starting off with the basics of economics. Next week, we plan on having more fun speaking drills and lectures on some of the expectedly huge arguments next year, such as Afro-pessimism, anti-blackness, settler-colonialism, and psychoanalysis. We’re looking forward to an insightful week!

Public Forum:

PF debaters promoted Stuy Speech and Debate at the open house on Thursday, where we spoke about our experiences on the debate team to prospective Stuy parents and students. We also rocked the new quarter-zips!

Speech:

Speech took a break this week on the tournament side of things, but we have continued to practice diligently ahead of the upcoming State Championships and the CFL and NSDA National Tournaments. We are looking forward to the Brooklyn Debate League Invitational tournament on the weekend of April 1st, another national-circuit invitational! A huge thanks to all team members who helped with the Stuyvesant open house this Thursday and helped showcase our skills to incoming freshmen!

Extemp:

After a sweeping performance at Grands last week, and with Donghyun Kang qualifying at the BDL last Thursday, Stuy’s Extemp team is now gearing up for States! With only a month left, our teammates are practicing harder than ever every week to finish the season strong!
