Stuy S&D Weekly Update: 3/7/23

Writer's picture: William TangWilliam Tang

Dear Speech and Debate Family,

Welcome back to the Stuyvesant Speech & Debate team weekly update! This past week, our team got back in the flow of practices and tournaments, with public forum, policy, speech, and extemp all competing over the weekend. We’re very excited to be back, and we are looking forward to the last few tournaments of the year!

With less than two weeks to go until we host Grands Qualifiers on March 18th, we need your help to ensure the tournament runs smoothly. Please consider bringing food to help feed our guests. Some lunch cuisines that parents currently plan to bring are Persian rice, dumplings, pasta, biryani, japchae, and pizza. We welcome all cuisines, so please bring whatever you cook best!

Please find the sign-up form below. The form will close on Thursday, March 16th.

As a reminder, you can find all of the team pictures, weekly updates, tournament schedules, permission slips/forms, and donation page on our website. Thank you for being a part of the Stuyvesant Speech & Debate family!

Team Updates

Public Forum:

PF takes on Lakeland! Amrisha Roy & Kikyo Makino-Siller and Helen Mancini & Astrid Harrington advanced to octo-finals! Three novice teams completed their state qualifications at the NY Regionals (Annie Li & Elijah Choi, Eric Liu & Benjamin Yarden, and Sofia Pisareva & Ankea Cheuk). Junior varsity team Clyde Konty and Jacob Lukose also finished with a winning record after beating progressive argumentation. Congratulations to Stuy Public Forum!!

Policy:

Policy had another successful debate weekend! Our debaters spun the L in Lakeland into a W, with our novice teams crushing the competition. Stuyvesant CD (Amrit Das & Vincent Chen) placed as the 13th seed and Stuyvesant VZ (Aruna Vaithilingam & Ziying Zhang) made it to semi-finals while also getting 1st and 2nd speaker! Our varsity teams, Stuyvesant KS (Rahul Kissoon & Kassandra Sinchi) and Stuyvesant WJ (Richard Wang & Jonathan Jiang), pushed through some tough prelim rounds and learned a lot despite getting pulled up from their brackets. A big thank you to Angier and Kailey for judging this weekend!

Lincoln Douglas:

March is going to be a very busy month for LD! Next week, we plan to go to our final tournament on the Jan-Feb topic, the Digital Speech and Debate Series. After that, we're going to be competing at Grands! Recently, the team has been reviewing feedback, rewriting cases, and finding updated evidence in preparation for our upcoming tournaments. We’re excited to finish the season strong!

Congress:

Stuy Congress has been preparing for tournaments that are coming up soon! To prep for Regionals this Tuesday, we had a lab dedicated to the art of crystallization and a mock round to see new skills in action. To help our novices hone their extemporaneous speaking skills, we have also arranged a cross-training with Extemp this week and are very much looking forward to it! Last but not least, our varsity is getting excited for Grands at Stuy in two weeks!

Parliamentary:

Parli is getting ready for our tournament on March 11th at Friends Seminary! To brush up on our skills, we will have our very own coach Rodda John give a lecture on Wednesday. Additionally, we are planning on holding two practice rounds, one on Monday and one on Friday. We are looking forward to going to another in-person tournament, and we will take on the competition with vigor!

Speech:

This week, Speech competed at the New York City District tournament—at which the pair of Ethan Khosh and Audrey Hilger qualified in Duo Interpretation for the National Speech and Debate Association National Tournament in Arizona in June. Eshaal Ubaid also qualified in Original Oratory—but qualified as well in US Extemp and will compete in Extemp at Nationals. Congratulations to all qualifiers! Speech is also ramping up for the Last Chance tournament this weekend, where team members look to qualify for the state championship. We are also looking forward to the NY Catholic League Grands in two weeks by practicing hard and developing our food recipes to bring. Look forward to Grands and Nationals!

Extemp:

Extemp saw success at the NSDA districts this weekend to qualify for nationals in Arizona! Eshaal Ubaid championed in US Extemp, securing a qual, and Aleksey Olkhovenko and Justin Ha got finalist places as alternates in International Extemp (note: the NSDA separates US and International into two separate events, unlike most other tournaments that have one category with both topics in their questions). Looking forward to Grands on the 18th with competitors Aleksey Olkhovenko, Eshaal Ubaid, and Kai Li. Furthermore, this March, extemp is delving into March Madness! Members will be participating in and potentially even competing in other events in order to cross-train important skills, in addition to finalizing their half-quals for states. Kudos to all of the hard work the underclassmen have been putting in while varsity has been competing in the national circuit. They'll be sure to keep it up this month!
