Stuy S&D Weekly Update: 4/3/23

Dear Speech and Debate Families,

Welcome back! This week, many of our teams competed in invitationals, national qualifiers, and the last locals of the year. They all did wonderfully, and we’re very proud of our competitors for working hard to finish the season strong!

As a reminder, the quarter-zips for the 2022-2023 season have arrived! If you ordered a quarter-zip and have yet to pick it up, please go to room 627 this week to pick it up.

You can find all the team pictures, weekly updates, tournament schedules, permission slips/forms, and donation page on our website. Thank you for being a part of the Stuyvesant Speech & Debate family!

Speech at the BDL Invitational on April 1st!

Team Updates

Congress:

This week was full of quals and quality performances as Stuy Congress debaters look ahead to States and Nationals! Freshman Sebastian Tecza completed his second and final qualification for the state tournament by placing 1st at Thursday’s BDL. Juniors Sarah Diaz and William Tang were incredibly successful at Saturday’s NSDA Nationals Qualifier at Chaminade High School, with both competitors breaking into finals. William placed 2nd and qualified for the Senate at NSDA Nationals in June! The team is incredibly proud of all the work its members have done this season, and is getting excited for States and Nationals in the coming months!

Extemp:

Justin Ha, Unique Zhang, and Isaac Ho were the top three at this weekend's BDL Invitational in extemp! Shoutout to Joseph Hakim for also competing very well, and to our coach DiCo for making this invitational such a success. As one of the last tournaments of this season, our team had a lot of fun bonding during this time. The entire team is maintaining its practice flow and looks forward to a rest period during the spring break where we will be practicing online. We can’t wait for States!

Lincoln Douglas:

The LD novices have been hard at work this week, after creating both a novice-run Instagram page and buying a mascot for the team! This past weekend, Lauren also competed at the Harrison Round Robin, where she had a great time. Looking forward, many people on the team are now finalizing their plans for debate camp this summer, but with a few months still left to go, our team is excited to end the season strong!

Parliamentary:

This week, Parli sent Henry Bansbach, Isaac Houts, Everett Torrey, and Adrian Turkedjiev to the NPDL Tournament of Champions! Both teams had a great time debating, and Adrian and Everett ended with an 8-6 winning record! In the upcoming week, we will have a meeting to have practice rounds and to prepare for NYPDL April. We’re looking forward to the last tournaments of the season!

Policy:

This week, policy held joint meetings between the novices, JV, and Varsity debaters. The more experienced debaters helped the novices understand more complex arguments, and we had fun applying this past year’s arguments to the upcoming topic! We are looking forward to doing a deep dive into the 2NR and 2AR (policy’s concluding speeches) at this Tuesday's meeting.

Public Forum:

Public Forum had a great meeting this week practicing weighing drills and brainstorming for the new April topic: The United States Federal Government should ban the collection of personal data through biometric recognition technology. The team is also super excited to begin preparations for the upcoming NY State Championships!

Speech:

This week, Speech competed at the Brooklyn Debate League Invitational and had a great performance! In Oral Interpretation, Erica Liu was the champion. In Dramatic Performance, Audrey Hilger was the champion. In Declamation, Eli Lifton was the champion. Congratulations to our speakers, and we can’t wait for States!
