Dear Speech and Debate families,
Welcome back to the Stuy Speech and Debate weekly update!
It was very heartwarming to see over 600 attendees at the 2023-2024 Speech and Debate kickoff meeting last week. Thank you so much to everyone who was able to attend! Attached below is a digital copy of the Information Packet that was distributed during the meeting. A reminder to all that the judging information on the second page should be returned by all students to their respective captains.
As a closing note about fundraising efforts, our goal is to ensure that every student, regardless of their financial situation, has the opportunity to participate in tournaments across the country. We have never and will never turn away a student from a tournament because of their inability to pay. That is why we are committed to raising funds to cover the costs of approximately ten national tournaments — including Princeton, Harvard, UPenn, Emory, Lexington, John Edie Holiday Debates, New York State Championships, Catholic Forensics League Nationals, Tournament of Champions, National Speech and Debate Association Championships — each priced at roughly $25,000. Any contribution, no matter how small, will help our talented students achieve their dreams and showcase their skills on a national stage. Team Updates
Parliamentary:
Parliamentary Debate had a wonderful time at the NYPDL November In-person tournament! In the novice division, Paul Stipp & Alexander Georgatos CHAMPIONED the tournament! Katelyn Huang & Melody Qu, Carter Kuo & Ziv Barel, Eloise Dugdale & Lucas Miller all made it to Novice Quarterfinals. Nafis Mahim placed 5th for Novice speaker awards, and we had a grand total of five teams make it to the elimination rounds. In the varsity division, Everett Torrey & Adrian Turkedjiev made it to Varsity Semifinals. We are very proud of how our team performed and we look forward to the NYPDL Online tournament coming up next weekend!
Public Forum:
Public Forum had a great time at Scarsdale this weekend, the first in-person tournament for our novices. Congrats to novices Lander Bovenzi & Benjamin Volovik for going UNDEFEATED and Ethan Zheng & Adrien Devery Michaelson and Anika Chandran & Amani Kaushal for their winning records! Looking ahead, Public Forum is excited to continue researching the new topic and conducting practice rounds to prepare for the Princeton Invitational!
Congress:
Congressional Debate had a great time at Novice/JV Scarsdale this Saturday! We had 9 members competing total, and two competitors received half-qualifications at this tournament. Sophomore Ellis Thompson placed 4th overall, fully qualifying for states after just three tournaments, while sophomore Sebastian Tecza CHAMPIONED the whole event! This week, we're looking forward to watching the JV mock rounds at Thursday's practice and preparing for the upcoming Princeton Invitational.
Speech:
Last week, Speech had an amazing time at Scarsdale, with everything from intense competition at the tournament to heartfelt bus chatter and late-night snacks. JVers competed in Oral Interp, with Amanda Greenberg placing 11th, Noshin Torsa placing 12th, Viviana Lupercio placing 14th and Vivian Lin placing 16th. In Declamation, Kory Chen placed 15th and Xili Chen placed 19th. Captain Ethan Khosh also came to judge and coach! This first away tournament for the JV was a real bonding experience for all and will surely be one of the year’s highlights, even this early on. Look forward to Princeton at the beginning of December!
Extemp:
The extemp JVers had a wonderful time at the Scarsdale underclassmen tournament last weekend! From laughter-filled shenanigans on the bus ride to drastic improvements in their speeches, they all (Justin Zhang, Iverli Garcia Perez, Joya Liu, Tessa Haidu, Myles Vuong) walked away stronger and more confident. Myles Vuong, in particular, placed 12th in the tournament! We would also like to acknowledge the Varsity extempers who came to judge, Aleksey Olkhovenko and Eshaal Ubaid. Go Stuy!
Lincoln Douglas:
Lincoln Douglas had a great time at the Scarsdale Invitational this weekend! We had nine entries in the novice division, and they all did excellently and gained tons of experience! We're very proud of all the work the novices have put in, and we look forward to even more great performances during the rest of the season!
Policy:
Policy debate had a great week, starting with a fantastic Kickoff meeting! Rahul and Salioudian demonstrated a 1AC and 2NR during the showcase, giving a taste of what policy debate has to offer. Last week, we met twice with our novice team and wrote a full aff case to cross-apply the concepts they’ve learned thus far. We would like to thank our coach, Emmanuel, for all of his help throughout this season, and we are looking forward to more tournaments and practices next month!
