Dear Speech and Debate Families,

Welcome back to the Stuyvesant Speech & Debate team weekly update! Last week, our teams competed in the Grand National Tournament (CFLs) in Louisville and placed top 10 in the country. We would like to extend a big thank you to the parents, judges, and coaches who generously volunteered their time and energy for this trip, and to our students for their hard work, dedication, and competitive team spirit. Congratulations to everyone who participated!

As a reminder, you can find all the team pictures, weekly updates, tournament schedules, permission slips/forms, and donation page on our website. Thank you for being a part of the Stuyvesant Speech & Debate family!

Speech team at Grand Nationals in Louisville!

Team Updates

Extemp:

We are SO proud of all THREE of our extemp entries for advancing to elimination rounds at Grand Nationals last weekend. Kai Li made it to the octo-finals, and Aleksey Olkhovenko and Eshaal Ubaid advanced to the quarter-finals! Together, they were the 13th, 18th, and 34th top speakers at a tournament with 200 of the best extempers in the country. We could not have done it without the support of Ms. Sheinman, DiCo, and the good spirit and dedication of the entire team. What an end to a great season!

Congress:

In Student Congress, junior William Tang competed at Grand Nationals last weekend and advanced to the semi-final round! Meanwhile, as the rest of the team takes a well-deserved break after a successful season, we are looking forward to a team dinner next weekend. We can’t wait to see what next season may bring!

Lincoln Douglas:

StuyLD went to CatNats last weekend! Henry and Daniel both went 3-2 in Prelims, with both losing their bubble rounds on a 2-1 decision. Now that the season has ended, StuyLD is looking to summer plans, as Lauren heads off to college and the novices begin to learn more about progressive debate. It has been a great season, and we're incredibly thankful for the support that Ms. Sheinman and the rest of Stuy have given our team!

Parliamentary:

As the season comes to a close, Parli is starting to wind down. Last week, we did practice rounds on the topics of censorship of language, religious forms of justice, and ancient Rome. We can’t wait for next season!

Policy:

Policy debate had a great time at Grand Nationals last weekend! Despite some complications, two of our teams still managed to make it to bubble rounds (the round that determines if you go to the octo-finals). We had a lot of fun in our rounds and enjoyed the strong competition and close debates. We want to give a big thank you to our coaches Manny and Rose for all of their help in prepping, and also to Ms. Sheinman for making the whole trip possible!

Public Forum:

PF takes on Grand Nationals! Competitors Amrisha Roy, Kikyo Makino-Siller, Astrid Harrington, Helen Mancini, Erica Lung, and Annie Li spent two fun days in Louisville! Helen + Astrid advanced to double-octofinals, and Amrisha + Kikyo and Annie + Erica picked up 10 and 9 ballots respectively. We can’t wait for next season!

Speech:

Last weekend, Speech competed at the National Catholic Forensics League tournament! Senior Melia Moore advanced to the octo-finals in Dramatic Performance, and junior Erica Liu made the octo-finals in Oral Interpretation! In Declamation, sophomore Eli Lifton placed 15th in the nation by advancing to Semifinals! Senior Emily Lu in Original Oratory, freshman Audrey Hilger in Dramatic Performance, and sophomore Will Zhang in Declamation all did great in the preliminary rounds. With 6 national entries, Stuyvesant has one of the most prolific speech teams in the nation, and we’re excited to continue improving. We look forward to the start of the next season at Yale!
